Reading Olympics Teams Compete For the third year in a row, Coventry Christian Schools’ students participated in the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit’s Reading Olympics. For the first time, however, CCS fielded two teams, one at the Elementary level (4th grade) and one at the Junior/Middle level (5th – 8th grades). Both teams competed Tuesday, March 24th, at Pottstown Middle School in three rounds of questions against other teams from local schools. The teams were coached and led by CCS staff members, librarian Cheryl Snyder, and teachers Sandra Ling, Doji Dove and Dawn Reigner. Reading Olympics is a success-driven competition, as teams are scored for the knowledge they possess rather than head-to-head competition.
Sixteen Coventry Kids read a total of about 80 books and answered questions about those books. Sound like a challenge? Try remembering names, places, and other details about each book! Parents, grandparents and other relatives watched as students attempted to answer various questions about the books, scoring points for correctly answered questions, working together within their teams and all walking away winners, having put forth their best effort. As one grandmother put it, “You can tell their excitement when they have read a book and know the answer – their faces light up.”
As Cheryl Snyder, the librarian, pointed out, “That’s what it’s all about – reading and sharing that knowledge with others. Keep reading!”
